Effective slip and friction reduction in nanograted superhydrophobic microchannels

چکیده
Enabled by a technology to fabricate well-defined nanogrates over a large area 2 2 cm2 , we report the effect of such a surface, in both hydrophilic and hydrophobic conditions, on liquid slip and the corresponding friction reduction in microchannels. The grates are designed to be dense 230 nm pitch but deep 500 nm in order to sustain a large amount of air in the troughs when the grates are hydrophobic, even under pressurized liquid flow conditions e.g., more than 1 bar . A noticeable slip i.e., slip length of 100–200 nm, corresponding to 20%–30% reduction of pressure drop in a 3 m high channel is observed for water flowing parallel over the hydrophobic nanogrates; this is believed to be an “effective” slip generated by the nanostrips of air in the grate troughs under the liquid. The effective slip is clearer and larger in flows parallel to the nanograting patterns than in transverse, suggesting that the nanograted superhydrophobic surfaces would not only reduce friction in liquid flows under pressure but also enable directional control of the slip. This paper is the first to use nanoscale grating patterns and to measure their effect on liquid flows in microchannels. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2337669

Tailoring the hydrodynamic boundary condition is essential for both applied and fundamental aspects of drag reduction. Hydrodynamic friction on superhydrophobic substrates providing gas-liquid interfaces can potentially be optimized by controlling the interface geometry. Therefore, establishing stable and optimal interfaces is crucial but rather challenging. Here we present unique superhydropho...
متن کاملSustainable drag reduction in turbulent Taylor-Couette flows by depositing sprayable superhydrophobic surfaces.
We demonstrate a reduction in the measured inner wall shear stress in moderately turbulent Taylor-Couette flows by depositing sprayable superhydrophobic microstructures on the inner rotor surface. The magnitude of reduction becomes progressively larger as the Reynolds number increases up to a value of 22% at Re=8.0×10(4). We show that the mean skin friction coefficient C(f) in the presence of t...

Skin friction drag contributes a major portion of the total drag for small and large water vehicles at high Reynolds number (Re). One emerging approach to reducing drag is to use superhydrophobic surfaces to promote slip boundary conditions. However, the air layer or "plastron" trapped on submerged superhydrophobic surfaces often diminishes quickly under hydrostatic pressure and/or turbulent pr...

We present in this Letter an experimental characterization of liquid flow slippage over superhydrophobic surfaces made of carbon nanotube forests, incorporated in microchannels. We make use of a particle image velocimetry technique to achieve the submicrometric resolution on the flow profile necessary for accurate measurement of the surface hydrodynamic properties. We demonstrate boundary slipp...
متن کاملImproving the natural convective heat transfer of a rectangular heatsink using superhydrophobic walls: A numerical approach
The effect of utilizing superhydrophobic walls on improving the convective heat transfer in a rectangular heatsink has been studied numerically in this paper. The vertical walls were kept at isothermal hot-and-cold temperatures and horizontal walls were insulated. The boundary condition on the walls was: no-slip for regular, and slip (with slip length of 500 µm) for superhydrophobic walls. By c...
